since 1991, any pregnancies were established in the world using immature eggs that were obtained from women with polycystic ovary syndrome.
Indications
To day,IVM treatment is initially considered for young women, under the age of 38, who have many follicles in their ovaries. Women with polycystic ovaries (PCO) or polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) are the best candidates for this treatment
IVM treatment is also suitable for egg donors because
no hormone therapy is taken to produce large numbers of mature eggs.
IVM followed by embryo freezing, is the most effective option for women undergoing chemotherapy in order to preserve their fertility
The whole treatment consists of two or three vaginal ultrasounds, the first performed during day 2 or 3 of the patient’s menstrual cycle and the second between days 6 and 9, in order to assess the endometrium and measure the size and number of growing follicles.
|
During this time, the female is given hormones to prepare the uterine lining - endometrium.
The oocyte retrieval is usually performed between days 10 to 14 of the cycle.
An injection of HCG (Human Chorionic Gonadotropin) to mature the eggs is given approximately 36 hours prior to egg retrieval.
Example of IVM process
Harvest of one mature oocyte (Metaphase II) + any immature oocytes : prophase I (P I) - and Metaphase I (MI)
> ICSI with oocyte M II
> culture with P I and M I oocytes

After egg retrieval and embryo transfert some medication treatment for endometrium support and implantation enhancement is required.
